Childhood trauma and suicide attempt: A meta-analysis of longitudinal studies from the last decade
Introduction
Suicide is an ancient and cross-cultural theme, and remains a public health problem worldwide (Wilcox and Wyman, 2016). Despite advances in psychology and psychiatry, the various presentations of suicidal behavior and its association with various mental disorders blur our understanding and accurate determination of its etiological factors (Ljung et al., 2014). For example, at least 2% of the car accidents are related to suicidal behaviors, a problem frequently underreported and of a major importance (Pompili et al., 2012). Bruffaerts et al. (2015) warn about an important limitation to identifying risk factors for suicide in the current literature: although these factors may interact, the extent to which different risk factors influence one another is relatively unknown (Bruffaerts et al., 2015).
Different risk factors are associated with subsequent onset of suicidality, including mental disorders, traumatic events during childhood, and physical health problems. Although sexual abuse has a significant correlation with lifetime suicide attempts (SAs), studies have concluded that it is only “modestly related” with subsequent psychiatric disorders (Sun et al., 2016, Johnstone et al., 2016). These investigations suggest that the influence of high-risk family environments has a particular role in SA (Sun et al., 2016, Johnstone et al., 2016). Childhood adversity is defined variably in the literature, including such events as familial death, parental substance misuse and mental disorder, parental criminality, parental separation, residential instability, child maltreatment (e.g., physical, sexual, and verbal abuse), and witnessing violence in the home. Six broad categories of childhood trauma (CT) were found in the examined studies: (1) sexual abuse, (2) physical abuse, (3) emotional abuse, (4) physical neglect, (5) emotional neglect, and (6) broken home. In several studies, these categories of traumatic events have shown a significant association with SA (Angst et al., 2014, Björkenstam et al., 2016, Hughes, K., Lowey, H., Quigg, Z., Bellis, M.A., n.d. Relationships between adverse childhood experiences and adult mental well-being: results from an English national household survey. doi:10.1186/s12889-016-2906-3.).
A previous meta-analysis pointed to a causal relationship between non-sexual child maltreatment and a range of mental disorders, drug use, SA, sexually transmitted infections, and risky sexual behavior (Norman et al., 2017). However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has meta-analyzed the risk of SA following different types of CT. Within this context, the present meta-analysis aimed to quantify the relationship between SA and different childhood traumatic events in longitudinal (cohort) studies published in the last 10 years.

Methods
This systematic review adhered to the PRISMA statement and followed an unpublished predetermined protocol (Moher et al., 2015).
Study Selection
The primary search yielded 4527 potential studies. Of these, nine studies met the inclusion criteria, covering a population of 6612. At the first stage, after removing duplicate entries, the titles and abstracts of 1281 articles were read. The reasons for exclusion were: 516 studies used ineligible designs (case-control, cross-sectional, etc.), 404 did not investigate the association between CT and lifetime SA, 171 did not provide original/primary data (reviews, editorials, commentaries,
Discussion and recommendations
Physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and witnessing domestic violence during childhood are risk factors for later SA. These events have a highly adverse impact on mental health and are associated with internalizing and externalizing behaviors. The results of our meta-analysis demonstrate that the OR of SA ranges from 2.1 to 4.69 for children that experienced a broken home and emotional negligence, respectively. Interestingly, ORs were almost the same across the included studies, except those
