The PRISMA Statement: A Guideline for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Coastal land transformation has been identified as a topic of research in many countries around the world. Several studies have been conducted to determine the causes and impacts of land transformation. However, much less is understood about coupling change detection, factors, impacts, and adaptation strategies for coastal land transformation at a global scale. This review aims to present a systematic review of global coastal land transformation and its leading research areas. From 1,741 documents of Scopus and Web of Science, 60 studies have been selected using the PRISMA-2020 guideline. Results revealed that existing literature included four leading focus areas regarding coastal land transformation: change detection, driving factors, impacts, and adaptation measures. These focus areas were further analyzed, and it was found that more than 80% of studies used Landsat imagery to detect land transformation. Population growth and urbanization were among the major driving factors identified. This review further identified that about 37% of studies included impact analysis. These studies identified impacts on ecosystems, land surface temperature, migration, water quality, and occupational effects as significant impacts. However, only four studies included adaptation strategies. This review explored the scope of comprehensive research in coastal land transformation, addressing change detection, factor and impact analysis, and mitigation-adaptation strategies. The research also proposes a conceptual framework for comprehensive coastal land transformation analysis. The framework can provide potential decision-making guidance for future studies in coastal land transformation.

Periodontitis is an infectious disease characterized by the inflammatory destruction of the tooth supporting tissues. In multi-rooted teeth, this process leads to periodontal destruction within furcations creating defects demanding in terms of treatment. Regeneration of class II furcation involvement, although possible, is considered an unpredictable procedure, especially in terms of the bone fill. The interest in wound healing improvement by additional use of autologous concentrates of growth factors remains high in many fields of dentistry. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate and biomaterial. PRF forms a solid fibrin matrix, which is slowly remodeled comparable to the natural blood clot. Its utilization is associated with release of growth factors and glycoproteins over a long period of time. PRF activates alkaline phosphates, which show osteoblastic activity and this activation influences the bone formation.

The aim of this review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was to evaluate the adjunctive use of platelet-rich fibrin in surgical treatment of furcation defects.

Major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) share clinical features and genetic bases. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies assessing the effect of polygenic risk score (PRS) for psychiatric disorders on brain structure show heterogeneous results. Therefore, we provided an overview of the existing evidence on the association between PRS for MDD, BD and SCZ and MRI abnormalities in clinical and healthy populations.

A search on PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus was performed to identify the studies exploring the effect of PRS for MDD, BD and SCZ on MRI measures. A total of 25 studies were included (N = 13 on healthy individuals and N = 12 on clinical populations).

Both in affected and unaffected individuals, PRS for BD and SCZ showed either positive or negative correlations with cortical thickness (CT), mostly involving fronto-temporal areas, whereas PRS for MDD was associated with cortical alterations in prefrontal regions in healthy subjects.

The heterogeneity in the methods limits the conclusions of this review.

Overall the evidence on the effect of PRS for MDD, BD and SCZ on brain is considerably heterogeneous and far to be conclusive. However, from the results emerged that PRS for MDD, BD and SCZ were associated with widespread cortical abnormalities in all the populations explored, suggesting that genetic risk for MDD, BD and SCZ might affect neurodevelopmental processes, resulting in cortical alterations that transcend diagnostic boundaries and seem to be independent from the clinical status.

Multimodal analgesia is a strategy that can be used to improve pain management in the perioperative period for patients undergoing surgery of the spine. However, no review evidence is available on the quantitative models of multimodal analgesia within this clinical setting. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the effects of maximal (≥3 analgesic agents) multimodal analgesic medication for patients undergoing surgery of the spine.

We included randomized controlled trials that had evaluated the use of ≥3 multimodal analgesia components (maximal multimodal analgesia) in patients undergoing spinal surgery. We excluded patients who had received neuraxial or regional analgesia. The control group consisted of placebo, standard care (any therapeutic modality including ≤2 analgesic components). The primary outcomes were the postoperative pain scores at rest evaluated at 24 and 48 hours. We searched MEDLINE via OvidSP, EMBASE via OvidSP, and the Cochrane Library (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and CENTRAL). We used the Cochrane standard methods.

We identified consistently improved analgesic endpoints across all predetermined primary and secondary outcomes. A total of 11 eligible studies had evaluated the primary outcome of pain at rest at 24 hours. The patients who had received maximal multimodal analgesia were identified to have had lower pain scores with an average mean difference of −1.03 (P < 0.00001). The length of hospital stay was shorter for the patients who had received multimodal analgesia (mean difference, −0.55; P < 0.00001).

Perioperative maximal multimodal analgesia consistently improved the visual analog scale scores for an adult population in the immediate postoperative period, with a moderate quality of evidence. We found a significant decrease in the hospital length of stay for patients who had received maximal multimodal analgesia with a high level of evidence and no statistical heterogeneity.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental condition characterized by instability in identity, interpersonal relationships, emotion regulation and impulsivity. These symptoms seem to be associated to specific brain alterations, which have been largely investigated. In particular, positron emission tomography (PET) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have demonstrated abnormalities in brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD, specifically in the fronto-limbic system. However, the role of medications on brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD is still largely unknown.

We conducted a search on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science of PET and fNIRS studies exploring the effect of medications on brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD. A total of 10 studies met the inclusion criteria.

Overall, PET studies showed an effect of psychotropic agents on brain metabolism, especially in frontal and temporal areas. Also, higher metabolic rates in frontal areas were found to correlate with clinical improvements. In contrast, fNIRS investigations reported an inconclusive or absent effects on brain hemodynamics in BPD patients.

The small sample size, the elevated percentage of women, the heterogeneity in pharmacological agents and the presence of comorbidities limit the conclusions of the present review.

Serotoninergic agents and second-generation antipsychotics produce changes in frontal and temporal metabolism in BPD, which appear to correlate with clinical improvements. Differently, brain hemodynamics do not seem to be significantly affected by the most commonly prescribed drugs in BPD, suggesting that the therapeutic actions of medications are not mediated by changes in neural hemodynamics.

To systematically review the available data and scientific literature and to compile all evidence-related studies of the effectiveness of pain management for traumatic patients in the emergency department.

The present study was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement.

A total of 777 articles were retrieved, and eighteen were selected according to the inclusion criteria in this systemic review. These studies were published from 2004 to 2020 and reported from all around the world. Seventeen studies were based on pharmacological intervention, and one study was based on nonpharmacological intervention. Analgesics and methoxyflurane administration were the most adapted interventions for pain management in traumatic patients among the selected studies. Other reported interventions were fixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture, sufentanil, and professional practice assessment.

This systemic review provides an overview of the effectiveness of pharmacological and nonpharmacological pain management in trauma patients in the emergency department. Analgesic treatment is an effective and ancient management strategy with drawbacks of associated side effects and intravenous administration. New strategies reported and applied by oral or nasal route administration with similar and better efficacies. However, large-scale studies are crucial for better implementation and outcome. Nonpharmacological interventions may also contribute to pain relief.
