Effect of Atenolol on Nocturnal Sleep and Temperature in Young Men: Reversal by Pharmacological Doses of Melatonin
Section snippets
Method
Eight healthy young male adults (mean age ± sem = 21.3 ± 0.9 years) gave informed consent and attended the sleep laboratory between 1900 h and 0700 h on 4 consecutive nights (Fig. 1). The subjects' good health and the absence of sleep disorders was confirmed by completion of a General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), 2-week sleep diary, and 1 week of wrist actigraphy prior to the study. In addition, the presence of any occult sleep disorder was checked by polysomnographic (PSG) recording of sleep
Method
Ten healthy young male volunteers (mean age ± sem = 22.0 ± 1.1 years), who did not take part in Study 1, gave informed consent and attended 3 nonconsecutive nights in the sleep laboratory, between 1900 h and 0700 h (Fig. 3). As in Study 1, the men's good health and the absence of any sleep disorder was confirmed with GHQ, sleep diary, and actigraphic screening. Each of the laboratory visits were separated by at least 7 days to allow recovery from loss of sleep and washout of administered drugs.
