Models for government intervention during a pandemic
2023, European Journal of Operational ResearchCitation Excerpt :Numerous attempts have been made to study the spread of past pandemics using mathematical models. Early modeling approaches for managing pandemics usually focus on general optimal control models for containing the spread of the disease (Greenhalgh, 1988 and Blount, Galambosi & Yakowitz, 1997). Recently, more specific models have been developed.
Optimal control of epidemic size and duration with limited resources
2019, Mathematical BiosciencesCitation Excerpt :Similarly, trade restrictions have been enforced in the past during livestock outbreaks - such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), foot and mouth disease (FMD), and avian influenza - resulting in devastating economic losses in countries with export–focused livestock industries [7–9]. Optimal control models have been widely used to identify effective strategies for minimizing the economic impacts of infectious diseases through vaccination, isolation and culling [10–15]. The aim of these models has been to minimize the costs of the epidemic, which have been usually assumed proportional to the total number of infected individuals (or the total infectious burden).
