Anatomical and neurophysiological basis of face recognition
2022, Revue NeurologiqueEffect of face-related task on rapid individual face discrimination
2019, NeuropsychologiaCitation Excerpt :Similarly, Jackson and Raymond (2006) reported that the recognition of unfamiliar faces was susceptible to temporal attention effects (attentional blink). At the neural level, face-selective responses in the middle fusiform gyrus of the ventral ocipito-temporal cortex are stronger when participants pay attention to the face stimuli (while ignoring superimposed non-face objects), or perform a face instead of a house matching/recognition task (Baldauf and Desimone, 2014; Clark et al., 1996; Furey et al., 2006; Haxby et al., 1994; O'Craven et al., 1999; Wojciulik et al., 1998; Yi et al., 2006). The time-course of these effects of attention remain controversial however, with some studies finding a modulation of face processing only after 200 ms of stimulus onset (Engell and McCarthy, 2010; Lueschow et al., 2004), while other studies showed that the early stages of face processing indexed by N170 was strongly modulated by selective attention (Mohamed et al., 2009).
Emotional context restores cortical prediction error responses in schizophrenia
2018, Schizophrenia ResearchCitation Excerpt :In prior research, the differentiation between neutral and emotional deviants is related different topographical locations on the cortex. In an earlier study, neuronal source localization of emotional deviants revealed activation of bilateral temporal cortex, occipital areas, posterior cingulate, fusiform, parahippocampal gyri and right insula (Vogel et al., 2015), which is accordance with earlier research on expression-related MMN (Kimura et al., 2011; Li et al., 2012) and early studies on face processing (e.g. Bentin et al., 1996; Clark et al., 1996; Kanwisher et al., 1997). In contrast to this widespread activation during pure emotional processing, neutral deviants have been shown to evoke confined activations in the left middle temporal gyrus and the superior temporal gyrus (Vogel et al., 2015), which is in line with studies on face processing (Haxby et al., 2000) and studies employing a visual oddball paradigm (review: Pazo-Alvarez et al., 2003).
A method to establish the spatiotemporal evolution of task-related cortical activity from electrocorticographic signals in single trials
2016, Journal of Neuroscience MethodsFunctional mapping of dynamic happy and fearful facial expressions in young adults with familial risk for psychosis - Oulu Brain and Mind Study
2015, Schizophrenia ResearchCitation Excerpt :During social interaction we cannot avoid facial stimuli that activate several brain regions in a characteristic way. Perception of faces has been associated with activations of the occipital and occipitotemporal areas (Clark et al., 1996; Haxby et al., 1994), inferior frontal cortex (Nakamura et al., 1999), fusiform gyrus (Dolan et al., 1996), superior temporal sulcus (Allison et al., 2000), medial prefrontal cortex (Dolan et al., 1996; Nakamura et al., 1999) and the limbic system (Adolphs et al., 1994; Breiter et al., 1996; Phillips et al., 1997). Deficient emotion processing of others is a common feature in patients with psychotic disorders (Chan et al., 2010; Comparelli et al., 2013; Daros et al., 2014), including in the prodromal phase.
