Adolescent stress and coping: implications for psychopathology during adolescence

Abstract

Stressful experiences and efforts to cope with stress are central to understanding psychological distress and psychopathology during adolescence. Depressive phenomena during adolescence offer a particularly interesting opportunity for understanding the role of stress and coping processes in adolescent psychopathology. Research concerned with stress and coping during adolescence is reviewed, using depression as a key example of a consequence of stress and coping processes. Based on this research, it is hypothesized that exposure to and appraisals of interpersonal stress combine with aspects of biological development and the use of maladaptive coping strategies to account for the emergence of significant gender differences in depression and other forms of psychopathology during adolescence. Directions for future research in this area are highlighted.

Prevalence and risk factors for nonconsensual distribution of intimate images among Italian young adults: Implications for prevention and intervention

Nonconsensual distribution of intimate images (NCII), also known as revenge porn, has become a significant social issue in recent years, with severe consequences for victims. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictors of NCII victimization among young Italian adults, focusing on the role of sexting, intimate partner violence (IPV), impulsivity, and self-disclosure. An online survey was conducted among a sample of 2047 Italian young adults (F = 29.3 %, M = 53.4 %, Not Indicated=16.9 %; mean age = 24.4, SD = 4.4) using a convenience sample recruited through internet. The survey included questions on NCII victimization, sexting behavior, sextortion, and IPV. Our findings showed that 33.9 % of respondents reported engaging in sexting behavior, with females being three times more likely to engage in sexting than males. Furthermore, 3.3 % of participants reported being victims of NCII, with over one-third of victims experiencing three or more types of NCII victimization. Multiple regression analysis revealed that sexting and IPV were significant predictors of NCII victimization, and the interaction effect between self-disclosure and impulsivity was also a significant predictor. This study contributes to the understanding of NCII in Italy and highlights the need for interventions and prevention strategies to address both NCII and IPV, given their strong continuity. The results also suggest that the relationship between self-disclosure, impulsivity, IPV, and NCII victimization is complex and requires further investigation, suggesting a scenario where the climate of violence may impair the victim's decision-making.
Examining the indirect contributions of irritability and chronic interpersonal stress on symptoms of anxiety and depression in adolescents

Chronic interpersonal stress has been identified as predictive of anxiety and depression. However, more research is needed to understand predictors of chronic interpersonal stress and mediators of its relationship with anxiety and depression. Irritability, a transdiagnostic symptom closely related to chronic interpersonal stress, may provide more insight into this relationship. While some research has demonstrated that irritability is related to chronic interpersonal stress, directionality is unknown. A bidirectional relationship between irritability and chronic interpersonal stress was hypothesized, such that irritability mediates the relationship between chronic interpersonal stress and internalizing symptoms and chronic interpersonal stress mediates the relationship between irritability and internalizing symptoms.
This study used three cross-lagged panel models to investigate the indirect effects of irritability and chronic interpersonal stress on anxiety and depression symptoms using data from 627 adolescents (68.9 % female, 57.7 % white) over a six-year period.
In partial support for our hypotheses, we found that the relationships between chronic interpersonal stress and both fears and anhedonia were mediated by irritability, and that the relationship between irritability and anhedonia was mediated by chronic interpersonal stress.
Study limitations include some temporal overlap in symptom measurements, an irritability measure that has not been previously validated to measure the construct, and lack of a lifespan perspective.
More targeted approaches in intervention for both chronic interpersonal stress and irritability may improve prevention and intervention efforts to address anxiety and depression.
Stability and change in a predictive model of emotional and behavioural problems from early adolescence to middle adulthood

The impact of negative life events, self-esteem, and coping behaviour are considered to be contributing factors in the development of emotional and behavioural problems. Differences in the predictive value of these three factors on emotional and behavioural problems from adolescence to adulthood have not yet been studied. Multiple linear regressions separate for the two sexes were used to assess whether the impact of negative life-events, self-esteem, and coping behaviour predicted emotional and behavioural problems at four discrete measurement points from early adolescence to middle adulthood in a cohort of N = 366 participants from a Swiss longitudinal community study. Mostly irrespective of sex, negative life-events and low self-esteem were significant predictors of internalizing problems, externalizing problems and total problem scores in adolescence as well as in adulthood. The explained variance in the model increased steadily from early adolescence to middle adulthood. While the impact of negative life-events was on the same level across all measurements until adulthood, the contribution of self-esteem increased steadily. There was a significant association, particularly in adolescent males, between avoidant coping and emotional and behavioural problems. The cross-sectional findings from this community study reflect long-term robust patterns in the associations of negative life-events, self-esteem, and avoidant coping with emotional and behavioural problems from adolescence to adulthood. Clinically, the three constructs represent actionable targets for optimizing assessment and intervention strategies across the adolescent life-span.
