Existing literature on statistical power for SWDs primarily focuses on designs with a single treatment. However, SWDs with multiple treatments are being proposed and conducted. We present a linear mixed model for a SWD with two treatments, with and without an interaction between them. We derive closed form solutions for the standard errors of the treatment effect coefficients for such models along with power calculation methods. We consider repeated cross-sectional designs as well as open and closed cohort designs and different random effect structures. Design features are examined to determine their impact on power for main treatment and interaction effects.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.Funding StatementThis study received funding from PCORI grant PCS-201C1-6482,.Author DeclarationsI confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.YesThe details of the IRB/oversight body that provided approval or exemption for the research described are given below:There were no subjects involved in this study and the work proposed is only statistical in nature; IRB approval was not necessary. All necessary patient/participant consent has been obtained and the appropriate institutional forms have been archived.YesI understand that all clinical trials and any other prospective interventional studies must be registered with an ICMJE-approved registry, such as ClinicalTrials.gov.
