We show that these cause the reproduction number to decrease with progression, and consequently have a drastic effect on the estimate of the necessary percentage of the population that has to contract the disease for herd immunity to be reached. We discuss the implications to COVID-19 and other pandemics.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.Funding StatementThe work is supported in partby the Israeli Science Foundation center of excellence, the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (Grant agreement No. 835152), as well as by ISF 2013/17 and BSF 2016414.Author DeclarationsI confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.YesThe details of the IRB/oversight body that provided approval or exemption for the research described are given below:irrelevantAll necessary patient/participant consent has been obtained and the appropriate institutional forms have been archived.YesI understand that all clinical trials and any other prospective interventional studies must be registered with an ICMJE-approved registry, such as ClinicalTrials.gov.
