Their reuse necessitates procedures to inactivate contaminating human respiratory and oral pathogens. We previously demonstrated decontamination of masks and respirators contaminated with an infectious SARS-CoV-2 surrogate via ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, vaporised hydrogen peroxide, and use of dry heat. Here, we show that these same methods efficiently inactivate a more resistant, non-enveloped oral virus; decontamination of infectious murine norovirus-contaminated masks and respirators reduced viral titres by over four orders of magnitude on mask or respirator coupons.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.Funding StatementThis work was supported by grants from the Walloon Region, Belgium (Project 2010053 -2020- MASK - Decontamination and reuse of surgical masks and filtering facepiece respirators) and the ULiege Fonds Speciaux pour la Recherche 2020.Author DeclarationsI confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.YesThe details of the IRB/oversight body that provided approval or exemption for the research described are given below:No IRB/oversight body approval was needed.
