In this paper, we consider a case to be active if it is infectious, and we propose methods to estimate the number of active infectious cases of COVID-19 from the official data (of confirmed cases and fatalities) and from public survey data. We show that the latter is a viable option in countries with reduced testing capacity or infrastructures.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.Funding StatementThis work is partially supported by grant CoronaSurveys-CM, funded by IMDEA Networks and Comunidad de Madrid, Spain.Author DeclarationsI confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.YesThe details of the IRB/oversight body that provided approval or exemption for the research described are given below:The Ethics Board of IMDEA Networks Institute gave ethical approval for this work on 2021/07/05.
